Follow These 3 Steps When Shipping Dangerous Materials

Depending on the business you run, you might sometimes have to send a variety of dangerous goods to another location. These items, such as lithium batteries, aerosols and gasoline, can endanger the people handling them, especially if they are packaged improperly or if transportation protocols are broken. Follow these steps to make sure you send these hazardous goods safely.

Follow These 3 Steps When Shipping Dangerous Materials

1. Get to Know the Goods

It is important to learn about the unique properties of the items you will ship. There are different methods for dangerous goods packaging, handling and transportation. For instance, some items will need to be segregated from others. Even seemingly harmless objects like perfume and tennis balls can be toxic under specific circumstances. Research these items, their transportation methods and the laws and regulations surrounding them.

2. Follow Correct Protocol

Now that you are aware of the specific procedures, it is time to practice them as you select transportation, pack the item and prepare the documents. If you choose the air or the sea, you will follow the regulations and codes established by the International Air Transport Association or the International Maritime Organization, respectively. Fill out all necessary documents with as much detail about the product and its travel as possible. Pack each item with enough cushioning and protective measures to avoid damaging them.

3. Send the Hazardous Materials

After following protocol, you can now send the goods to their destination. Double check the documents and ensure that proper labeling is in place. If your employees are sending the materials, educate them on the product and the procedures. The people loading the goods away have the ultimate responsibility, so they need to receive the most information and sign the compliance forms.

Many items your business sends have the potential to be dangerous. When shipping them, ensure all rules and laws regarding transportation are followed to keep everyone safe.
